Portfolio: A Large Rural Garden
The Brief: To create a formal, traditional setting for a newly built rural farmhouse with year-round interest and views to the hedgerows
The Summer Border with a south facing sunny aspect is a riot of colour from June to August. Umbels, spires and buttons provide contrasting textures and forms. Colour and interest flow round the garden through the year; as the summer border fades, the plumes and spires of late flowering perennials reaches a crescendo of blues and buffs, bronze and purples through the autumn. The winter border shines in low sunlight with purple and copper cornus stems, and white betula tree trunks underplanted with snowdrops and hellebores. In the spring border, rivers of crocus are followed by dwarf narcissus under spring flowering shrubs of magnolia, viburnum, and spiraea arguta.
A 'Yew Walk' forms the boundary of the rear drive, making reference to the formality and grandueur of the architecture of the house
